The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything | Phillip Lanier

In Episode 224 of Call The Damn Leads, Drewbie sits down with entrepreneur and author Phillip Lanier for a real, raw conversation about mindset, money, sales, and what it actually takes to build a life of freedom.

Key Takeaways

  • Say yes to the opportunity first, then figure out how to deliver it in real time.
  • Phillip grew up with nothing and built and sold a successful business without a traditional college path.
  • Retirement without purpose can leave you empty, even after you've made the money.
  • You're most equipped to help the person you used to be, so your past experiences are your best asset.
  • When fear shows up, ask "What if it works?" and stay in the game long enough to win.

Phillip shares his journey from growing up with nothing to building and selling a successful business — all without a traditional college path. Along the way, he breaks down the power of saying "yes" before you're ready and figuring things out in real time.

The conversation dives into the truth about financial freedom, why retirement isn't the ultimate goal for most people, and how losing purpose can happen even after "making it." Phillip also opens up about the mindset shifts required to break out of scarcity thinking and start creating real opportunity.

One of the most powerful moments in the episode comes from a simple but life-changing question: "What if it works?"

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Phillip Lanier mean by saying yes before you're ready?

Early on, Phillip was a 1099 gopher on construction sites. A superintendent asked him to put in a mile-long walking trail with footbridges over the ravines, then asked if he could run a machine. He'd driven one across a friend's site a couple weeks before, so he said yes. The Caterpillar dealer let him try a machine for a month, he learned on the job at $50 to $60 an hour, and a buddy from church helped build the bridges. The sale came to him... saying yes closed it.

Why didn't retirement work for Phillip Lanier?

Phillip sold his company at 47 and doesn't have to work again. So he bought a catamaran in Annapolis with no idea how to drive it and spent about a year going back and forth to the Bahamas. Then it hit him. He wasn't growing, he wasn't contributing, and his daughters were watching him not work. Plenty of his friends who sold in their late 40s are divorced or alcoholics now, he says. His answer is simple: we're supposed to grow.

How do you break out of a scarcity mindset?

Phillip gave Drewbie two moves. First, when you catch yourself asking "what if it doesn't work?", ask what happens if it does. Second, outlast everyone. He's old enough to remember Rocky, and Rocky's claim to fame was still standing up. You might have to change your tactics or even change the game, but you stay in it. Both are simple. Both are hard on a morning when the bank account's low, and that's exactly when they count!

How did one sale turn into thousands for Phillip Lanier?

In 2003 the hours dried up and Phillip told a superintendent he and his wife were "getting really skinny." That's how he started cleaning shingle wrappers and scrap lumber off construction sites. As the business grew, he went after the national home builders. One sale to a single purchasing agent put his work in front of over a thousand salespeople in Charlotte, and that turned into 2,000 sales a year. Then he landed the rest of the top 10 builders and expanded to four more cities.
