Episode 223 – The Hidden Psychology of Sales | Jonathon Grantham

In Episode 223 of Call The Damn Leads, Drewbie Wilson sits down with Jonathon Grantham to talk about corporate sociopathy, business psychology, and the hidden personality dynamics that influence major business decisions.

Jonathon shares a jaw-dropping story involving a £5 billion outsourcing contract where a last-minute contract swap resulted in an 80% pricing mistake that continues to impact the company years later. From there, they get into how personality traits influence leadership, negotiations, sales, and corporate culture.

Together, Drewbie and Jonathon dig into why some of the most successful leaders display sociopathic tendencies, how narcissism and Machiavellian behavior show up in business, and why understanding buyer psychology can improve your sales results.

If you've ever sold into large organizations, worked under difficult leadership, or wondered why some people seem impossible to negotiate with, this episode covers the psychology behind business decision-making.

Key Takeaways

The Cost of Missing Critical Details

A single contract oversight during a multi-billion-dollar negotiation created a mistake worth billions and is a lesson on attention to detail in high-stakes deals.

Why Corporate Leadership Looks Different

Many executive leaders operate differently than typical salespeople because their decision-making is often driven by logic, strategy, and shareholder responsibility rather than emotion.

Sales Success Starts with Understanding People

The most effective sales professionals learn how their buyers think.

Why Some Salespeople Lose Deals They Already Won

Over-selling, over-talking, and failing to recognize buyer motivations can sabotage deals that were already ready to close.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened on the £5 billion contract Jonathon Grantham worked on?

Jonathon was on the technical side of a five-year, £5 billion outsourcing deal for a big IT firm. The client kept them changing contracts all weekend ahead of a 9 a.m. Monday announcement, and people had been awake for 48 hours. Then the contract got swapped at the last minute... and it was the money section that changed. The client walked away with roughly £5 billion of work for £1 billion, an 80% discount. That company is still paying for it. Read every page before you sign!

How common are sociopaths in corporate leadership?

More common than you'd think. Jonathon defines a sociopath as someone who feels little or no empathy, and it's one of the dark five traits along with narcissism, Machiavellianism, sadism and spite. Companies weed out most of those as people climb, but sociopathy goes up. His estimate is that in a company with over 1,000 staff, there's about a 50% chance the C-suite person across from you is a sociopath. Part of it is the law. A director's duty is to the shareholder, and your 401k is one of them.

What's the quickest sign you're selling to a sociopath?

Listen for ethics. Jonathon says most of us have a gut reaction when something's wrong, so we rarely stop and think about ethics at all. A sociopath doesn't get that reaction, so they have to study it, and a CEO can't get far without understanding it. So when a buyer starts talking about ethics, that's "a hell of a warning sign." Same goes for a company that tells you it's like a family. Jonathon calls that virtue signaling, and he says it's usually hiding something.

How do salespeople lose deals they've already won?

They keep selling. When Jonathon headed up IT, he'd watch reps run used-car tactics on deals in the tens of millions after his team had already done the research and picked their product. What he needed was an order taker: "Just rock up, give me the invoice. I'll sign the damn thing." He'd spend the next hour trying to get them to stop talking. So look at who's across the table first. Hand an analytical buyer the spec sheet and let them sell themselves.
