The 90-Day Wonder and Why People Buy From You | Roy Cammarano

Roy Cammarano sold a guy a quarter page ad in a weekly business newspaper. Before the ad, that guy was moving one or two copiers a month. During the campaign, 11 and 12. Then he canceled it because every customer walking in told him they'd seen the ad in the daily paper... a paper he never advertised in. His sales dropped right back to two.

Five weeks later he called Roy back begging for the ad. Roy sold him a junior page at more than double the price for twice the run.

That story is the whole episode in miniature. Roy has been selling since newspapers were the medium, and he built a technique he calls the 90-day wonder: walk into the decision maker and ask what exactly you'd have to do over the next 90 days to earn their business. Then do 100% of it. Then come back and ask them to honor what they said.

We got into where AI actually helps a salesperson (information, fast) and where it falls flat on its face. Roy studied NLP early in his career, so he breaks down how people take in information and why matching how someone communicates with you is the fastest rapport you'll ever build.

He also gave the four things that motivate every buyer you'll ever sit across from. Two come from outside a person, two come from inside. Roy's take on which ones matter is worth the listen by itself.

In This Episode You'll Learn

➢ The exact question Roy asks a decision maker to build a 90-day plan they wrote themselves
➢ Why the obligation you create by doing what you said is stronger than any close
➢ Roy's four-step order for every sale: rapport, credibility, jurisdiction, trust
➢ Where AI belongs in your process (organizing data, associative credibility) and the one thing it can't touch
➢ The Platinum Rule, and how to read whether someone is visual, auditory, kinesthetic or auditory digital
➢ The difference between the activity of sales and the accomplishment of sales, and why only one pays
➢ The four motivators behind every buying decision: pride, fear, imitation, gain

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 90-day wonder sales technique?

Roy Cammarano built it selling display ads for a startup business weekly in Jacksonville, Florida. He'd sit down with the decision maker and ask: "If in the next 90 days I wanted to get your business, tell me exactly what I would have to do." They'd hand him the plan themselves. Call once a week, send a letter, buy a drink... everyone had their own version. Roy did all of it, then came back on day 90 and asked them to commit to what they'd told him.

Why does doing what a prospect asks lead to the sale?

Because you've created an obligation. Roy put it this way: "I connected on that obligation that occurs in people's minds when you do what they've asked you to do." Drewbie's take on air: people want someone in their life who does what they said they'd do, in business and everywhere else. Roy called that personal integrity, and he tied it to how you listen: "Listen to learn, not listen to respond." Most people are just waiting for you to take a breath so they can pitch their widget.

What are the four steps every sale goes through?

Roy runs every sale in the same order: rapport, credibility, jurisdiction, trust. Rapport comes first, always. Credibility is why your product is good and what it'll do for them. Jurisdiction is when they see it, feel it, taste it and believe it, in their head and their heart. His line: "So if you can get their head involved, get their heart involved, they'll reach for their pocketbook, but then they trust you." And they won't buy until they like you and trust you've got their best interest in mind.

What motivates people to buy?

Roy says it's one of four things: pride, fear, imitation or gain. Fear is the old IBM pitch: you'd never get fired for buying IBM, but you could for picking Dell! Gain is "How is this going to help me?" Imitation is advertising, think Be Like Mike. Pride is wanting to be the best. Fear and gain come from outside you, and Roy bets on the inside two: "If it grows from the inside, it's gonna be great. And if it gets hit by the outside, it's gonna fall apart."
