Why Most Sales Teams Fail to Follow Up on Leads | Rich Cocuzzo

In Episode 226 of Call The Damn Leads, Drewbie Wilson sits down with sales leadership expert Rich Cocuzzo to discuss one of the most surprising problems businesses face: having more leads than they can handle—and still struggling to grow revenue.

Rich shares a real-world story about a manufacturing company that lost a major client while simultaneously allowing inbound leads to go untouched. The conversation dives deep into sales execution, sales and marketing alignment, AI's role in modern selling, and why business owners often become too close to their own operations to see growth opportunities.

If you've ever blamed marketing for poor leads, struggled with follow-up consistency, or wondered how AI will impact the future of sales, this episode delivers practical insights you can apply immediately.

Key Takeaways

  • Untouched inbound leads can become one of the biggest hidden revenue leaks in a business.

  • Sales teams must focus on high-impact activities before getting distracted by busy work.

  • Founder-led sales organizations often benefit from outside perspectives and expertise.

  • Marketing creates the story; sales turns interest into revenue.

  • Great salespeople create their own opportunities instead of waiting for leads.

  • AI should be used as an enhancement tool, not a replacement for sales expertise.

  • Companies that refuse to embrace AI risk falling behind competitors.

  • Sales and marketing alignment is critical for sustainable growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would a company let its inbound leads go untouched?

Rich Cocuzzo worked with a custom manufacturer that had just lost its second largest client. When he asked about lead flow, they told him, "We've got more leads than we can get to." The rest just fell off. They were short on people, so the team got rearranged until every warm lead had someone following up on it. Think about how many salespeople cold calling all day would kill for leads like that.

How fast should you follow up on an inbound lead?

Same day, if you can. Rich's take is that time kills deals, and it kills interest too. Someone fills out a form because they want to learn more right then, and the longer they wait, the colder that gets. If you've got AI set up, he says you should be able to respond almost immediately. And if you're missing your number while inbound leads sit there, those calls go ahead of the busy work.

Why do founder-led sales teams stop growing?

Rich calls it being institutionalized. You've run the place long enough that things get done a certain way because that's how they work here. It works... until it doesn't, and you hit a ceiling. He asks owners who their target audience is and why someone should buy from them, and a lot of them freeze. If the person who built it can't say it, how's a salesperson supposed to? Someone from outside, with none of that history, walks in and asks, what if you did this?

Will AI replace salespeople?

Rich doesn't think so. He expects it to take some of the lower-level work, like BDR and appointment-setting roles. With 30-plus years in sales and sales leadership, he uses it to check his own blind spots: here are my findings, what am I missing? He calls that "AI enhancement and AI acceleration as opposed to AI generated." His experience is what lets him spot when it's hallucinating. He told one of the sales teams he leads that learning these tools "is not optional."
